The Capitol Theater is located right in the heart of downtown Olympia. The Capitol was built in 1924 by the original owners E.A. Zabel and William Wilson who were purveyors of entertainment in the area since 1909. Joseph Wohleb was commissioned to design a “monument to amusement lovers in Olympia.” Since its beginnings, it has not only been a premier location of film in the Northwest but has also provided a fantastic venue for big name live performances as well. In November of 2009, the Olympia Heritage Commission presented the Olympia Film Society with the Historic Preservation Award. The theater is one of Olympia’s most treasured landmarks in the city and is one of the few locations that still show 35mm film.
