VHS Uber Alles is a local group dedicated to screening some of the best lower budget genre films presented exclusively in VHS and tomorrow night at the Grand Illusion they will be presenting the 1986 Cheesy/Chiller Spookies.
Let me just start by saying that Spookies is batshit crazy. It’s a haunted house movie like no other and only the year 1986 could have spawned this thing. A group of complete mismatched assholes are cruising for a party and happen upon this giant colonial mansion in the middle of a graveyard.
And they think it’s a good idea to go inside. Because they’re going to party.
They find a Ouija board, one of them turns into a demon ala Evil Dead and then it’s on. Of course they all split up and monsters of all fashions proceed to terrorize them through the night. The one thing that this is, it’s a great monster movie. Seriously, in every scene there’s a new monster. But I think that I’ve already said too much.
Originally started asTwisted Souls, that unfinished film died and gave birth to a spook show hodgepodge of ’80s makeup and monster effects that collide head on with badly edited additional footage from another unfinished film, creating a two-headed storyline that never meets eye to eye.
VHS Uber Alles does a great job every month of hosting these types of events so I’m sure this movie during this time of year will be a blast to watch with a crowd of people. Spookies screens tomorrow the 30th at 9pm at the Grand Illusion Cinema.
